I guess my Music Ministry started when I was four years old. I remember singing, "O Holy Night" from the brand new balcony of Fairview Grace EUB, now Fairview Grace United Methodist Church, in Fairview Park, Ohio, on the west side of Cleveland. The church expansion was not complete. I was scared. My Father carried me on his shoulders, up a ladder, to sing from the balcony on Christmas Eve. And I guess I have been ministering with and through music ever since.
All I know is that if Mrs. Rhodes played the organ, I conducted the choir. If Mrs. Rhodes conducted the choir, I played the organ.
I started The Cleveland Institute of Music at age four. I was the youngest student of Victor Babin and Vita Vronsky, the Russian Duo Pianists, the heads of The Cleveland Institute of Music. I could not even reach the pedals, but I delighted in music. I still do today.
Imagine. I have been playing the piano for fifty-nine (59) years. That's a lot of practicing and that's a lot of wrong notes. It is a joy to have my avocation, my occupation, and my vocation all lined up. I have had an exciting career in music and I feel like I am just starting.
